Welcome to Rooster & Squid, a children’s chapter book series where funny mysteries, unforgettable animal characters, and real-world learning come together.
Created by Dr. Jen, a veterinarian and lifelong animal lover, Rooster & Squid began with a simple idea: children should be able to enjoy exciting stories while naturally discovering more about animals, kindness, responsibility, and the world around them.
At the center of every adventure are Rooster, a big-hearted golden dog, and Squid, a clever gray cat with plenty of attitude. Together, they find themselves involved in mysteries, mishaps, animal adventures, and unexpected situations throughout the community of Trout Springs.
Dr. Jen brings her experience in veterinary medicine directly into the Rooster & Squid stories.
After more than 25 years in small-animal medicine, Jen understands how fascinating (and sometimes surprising) the animal world can be. Her stories turn that knowledge into engaging adventures that children can enjoy without feeling like they are reading a textbook.
Through Rooster and Squid, readers encounter real topics involving animal health, behavior, nutrition, safety, wildlife, veterinary care, and responsible pet ownership, all woven naturally into the story.
“I wanted to create books that children would genuinely enjoy reading while giving them a chance to learn something meaningful along the way.”
Rooster & Squid grew from Jen’s love of animals, storytelling, and helping young people understand the incredible world around them. The result is a series of standalone adventures where readers can pick up any book and jump right into the mystery.
From strange happenings and missing animals to veterinary cases and everyday trouble, Rooster and Squid always seem to find themselves right in the middle of the action.
And somehow, there is always something to learn along the way.
Dogs, cats, wildlife, farm animals, and other creatures are part of life in Trout Springs.
Rooster’s big heart and Squid’s sarcastic personality make this unlikely pair easy to follow from one adventure to the next.
Young readers can notice clues, make predictions, and try to figure out what happened alongside Rooster and Squid.
