About the Books
What ages are the Rooster & Squid books for?
The books are recommended for children ages 6–10. They work well for independent reading and family read-alouds.
What grade levels are the books for?
The books can work for children in first through fourth grade, depending on the child’s reading level. Younger readers may enjoy them aloud or with support, while many third and fourth graders can read them independently.
Do the books need to be read in order?
No. Every book tells a complete story, so readers can pick up any adventure and jump right in.
How many books are in the series?
There are 12 books so far, from Bowling Burglar to Something Blue, with more adventures on the way.
Are the stories scary?
The books contain mysteries, problems, and occasional close calls, but the stories are written for elementary readers and balance suspense with humor and family warmth.
Are the books good for developing or reluctant readers?
The short chapters, animal characters, humor, and ongoing mysteries may appeal to children who have difficulty staying interested in longer books.
Will my child learn anything about animals?
Yes! Each story weaves in real animal and veterinary topics, and every book ends with Tips from Rooster and Squid, a section of pet tips and animal facts.
Is the veterinary information accurate?
The stories are written by a veterinarian with more than 25 years of experience. They’re meant to entertain and teach, and they don’t replace advice from your own veterinarian.
